Book – Upper Fourth at Malory Towers

Author – Enid Blyton

Genre – Children’s Literature

Main Character – Darrel Rivers

Brief Summary –

Darrel is now at her fourth year at Malory Tower, but this year her younger sister - Felicity will be joining her. Darrel plans to boast about her beloved Malory towers, but soon Felicity befriends June. Alicia’s cheeky cousin. Who Darrel nor Alicia is very keen of, but that doesn’t take away the excitement Darrel has when she learns she is made head girl.

But soon she has to resolve all sort of problems as Head. Gwendoline a spoiled and only child, who hated exercise, sticks to Clarrisa, a new girl who doesn’t know about Gwen’s snobby ways. Clarrisa was also known as “honourable Clarissa” because of her intelligence, others who knew that Gwen stood by anyone who was smart, beautiful or gifted were furious.

Clarrisa had a weak heart which prevented her from doing some of her favourite things such as swimming, horse riding etc and Gwen had to take advantage.Shortly Gwendoline pretends to have a weak heart to get her out of the Exams and any outdoor activities. Despite the girls knowing Gwen’s trickeries, there were bigger things to worry about like trouble between the batten twins (Ruth and Connie).

Connie is a very stubborn girl and very determined to do everything for her sister against her wishes, Connie yells at Ruth’s behaviour whenever Ruth tries to confront her. Gwen didn’t like to stay outdoors but after she found out that, Clarrisa’s old nurse – Mrs Lucy lived there. The Principle – Miss Grayling also granted permission to both of them to visit Mrs Lucy’s cottage. Girls reached the cottage and met the old nurse and saw the huge treat she had prepared for them. However, Mrs Lucy expected lot of other kids and now she is worried about the food. Then an idea struck her about the midnight feast. All the girls (June and Felicity also joined) enjoyed the food and sort of created a mess in the common room.

Next morning, June decided to own the responsibility but Darrell differed. When June becomes stubborn, Darrel lost her temper and started hitting June. While she continued whacking June, Miss Potts walked in and she looked fuming. Miss Potts immediately took the pair to the headmistress (Miss Grayling). Miss Grayling instantly guessed the reason of Darrel’s behaviour, assoon as June owned up.

After further discussion, Darrel was no longer Head girl. Felicity also cut ties with June, after seeing June’s gladness toward Miss Grayling’s decision. But Darrel still helped everyone head girl or not, but she wished she had not lost her temper. Bill’s (short for Wilhelma) horse had colic so around midnight the two girls had got Miss. Peters  and helped Thunder (Bill’s horse). She had also helped Ruth stand up to her sister. Darrel had earned back her spot as head.

This book is about Gregory's "horror" experience before Christmas that includes dealing with bullies, fighting for publication of his newspaper, remembering to be on his best behavior to get presents and the constant fear in his mind about the involvement in damage of school property.

Greg knows that the police are coming for him when the surprise blizzard hits. The plot thickens as the snow does too, surrounding their house and trapping them inside.

This book portrays the dark side of Greg's family and his daily urge to play videogames. He meets his old friend Alfredo who, he discovers, makes a perfect comic stand.

He must suffer the torment of living with his brothers Rodrick and Manny who he feels get more attention than him.

This book focuses on the relationship of Manny and Greg and shows that Manny is very pampered and always gets his way whereas Greg never gets away with anything that he does.

Greg is the perfect average child who has his life "ruined" by siblings.

HOW COLORS AFFECT OUR MINDS

“You can have any color as long as it’s black.”

By listening to this quotation what do u understand by it? It means that any color can be changed or it can be light affecting but once black gets over it no color can remove its visibility and any color can work over other colors except on black.

Colour is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions. Certain colours have been associated with increased blood pressure, increased metabolism, and eyestrain. Colour plays an important role in people’s lives. Colours, other than emotionally affecting us can also have physical effects. But wait….

How do colours really affect our personality, mood and stress level? See emotional and physical stress is connected with colours because without colours there is no life, life will just be a blunder as without colours we can’t see a single thing our life would just be black or dark without any vision. Without colours there would be no variety, everyone and everything would be same. There would be no difference. Without colour distinction, variety would not have been possible. Creativity would be put to a limit.Sounderstand the importance of colours. Yes, coming back to stress, the stress both physical and mental is connected with colours and can be carried out by perceptions.

Hey! Do you know that strong, bright and neon colours can have a powerful effect on emotions. Colours like bright red, bright yellow and neon green can feel energizing and make you feel more alert, but can also be irritating on the eyes. These colours will grab out the attention and stand out from their surroundings.

One more fact that BLUE is the color of the mind and is essentially soothing, it affects us mentally, rather than the physical reaction we have to red. Have you seen a bull? A bull reacts with red colour and makes it to react physically. That is how physical reaction to colours take place. Strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft blues will calm the mind and aid concentration. Consequentlyit is serene and mentally calming.

Well now as we know the facts and have also discussed about the mental effect of color on our minds let us have a little fun

Let’s make it more interesting by adding a few riddles.

If you drop a yellow hat in the Red Sea, what does it become?

Answer: Wet

The bigger I become the less u can see. What am I?

Answer: Darkness

Name of the book: Hunger Games

Author: Suzanne Collins

Published on: 14 September 2008

Genre: sci-fi, action, drama

Synopsis: Living in Panem, Katniss Everdeen is a part of District 12, the poorest of all the 12 districts. On the day of reaping, she volunteers to take her sister's place for the annual hunger games. Making tributes fight to the death on live television is a way of the controlling body, Capitol, to keep the districts in line. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark -the boy tribute from district 12- reach the Capitol and soon are lifted into the arena. A total of 24 tributes, one boy and one girl from each District, can either die or kill. Compassionate for others, Katniss, though unintentionally shows the Capitol that the Districts can't be controlled. She sparks the rebellion that brings the Capitol to its knees. She becomes the face of this rebellion and loses all those she loves. People make their homes again out of the ashes of Humankind.

Why is it worth reading:I believe that any book that sends a strong message is worth reading. Having compassion for children, care for the injured, and love for others is well showed in this series. Being ready to fight for others and loved ones. One of the biggest reasons that this book is worth reading is that it is interesting and engaging. Suzanne Collins has greatly written the book and the language used is also very nice. This book has been an inspiration for many including myself.

Iconic quote:“It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”

Rating: 4/5

The Oath of the Vayuputras/ Amish Tripathi

This book is the 3rd book from the Shiva trilogy written by Amish. This book had everything; seriousness, humor, happy and sad moments. I totally loved it. It even gave a conclusion in the end that helped one summarize the story. It's such an amazing thing that Mr. Amish could link his story with the things that are there in actual Hindu mythology. It is the best book that I have ever read.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Hunger Games is a book which teaches us compassion for kids and how we need to stand up against something which is unfair and wrong. This trilogy goes through the story of Katniss Everdeen, who unknowingly sparks something that cannot be undone, an uprising against the cruel government. She stands up and leads the rebellion, even if it means losing those she loves.

Divisha Pandey

the fault in our stars/ john green

According to me, the book fault in our stars is a masterpiece. It has a very deep meaning and the characters are very well portrayed by the author. It teaches us that we should live our life to the fullest without thinking about all the problems that come along with it. Augustus Waters is shown as a very carefree and happy teenager and he doesn't really think about the fact that he has osteosarcoma whereas Hazel Grace suffering from thyroid cancer is very affected by the fact that she will not be able to live in this world for long and thus she always thinks about her death and how her parents would be affected by it. When Augustus and Hazel unite it is seen that how Augustus completely changes Hazel's point of view for life, he makes her realize that life is beautiful and how it should be lived in the moment without worrying about the future. Unfortunately, the ending of the book is awfully sad as Augustus dies because his condition deteriorated tremendously. Hazel at the end speaks about how Augustus was a wonderful human being and how Augustus gave her forever in a number of limited days.
Okay? Okay.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Austen gives us brave and good heroes and heroines, despicable villains, a decent dose of comic relief, a great and complex plot, and plenty of suspense of the mostly restrained, emotional variety. Austen's clever observations and dialogue contribute to her brilliance in developing fully formed characters, despite the polite manners throughout. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are two of the most romantic and memorable characters in the whole of English literature, and their story never fails to entertain.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany

The eighth and most probably the last book of the fictional and magical Harry Potter Series is a book which makes Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy united to fight and save the world from Lord Voldemort even though they were great enemies of each other. Their unity was born because of the friendship of their kids, Albus Severus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy who came into a lot of trouble and risked everything because of the wicked Delphini, the Daughter of Lord Voldemort whom no one knew existed. She acted as if she was Cedric Diggory's cousin and imperiused people in St. Mungo's to believe the same and was known there as Delphini 'Diggory'. She trapped them to go in the past using a Time-Turner and save her cousin from by Lord Voldemort, the boys failed two times and caused blunders like making Harry Potter die in the Battle of Hogwarts and making Voldemort rule. But later on, they made everything normal again but the situation was soon going to get the worst it could get shortly, the kids were taken by Delphi forcefully to the past and soon they got to know about what she really is. She was going to meet Voldemort's past in Godric's Hollow when he came to kill Harry Potter and tell him about her and warn him not to try to kill Harry Potter and if it happened, then sooner or later, the boy who lived would have to die someday and Voldemort would live forever long and rule the world, but then Albus saw Harry's mother, Lily coming out of her house and having Harry in a blanket which he knew his father had in the future. So, they wrote a message to his father telling him where and when they are and their parents reach there to save the world and at the end, The Dark Lord Voldemort never meets his daughter, the troublemaker Delphi is sent to Azkaban as punishment and everything remains the same.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

It was an amazing book! It focused teenagers, 12+, and also every little detail of incidents were explicitly described. It has a movie based on it, and as I read the book, I felt watching the very movie itself! Plot: Thomas is a boy who is trapped with many others in a small forested-area called the Glade, surrounded by a vast Maze, being a home to several hideous beasts called Grievers. It has many other sequel books, and I am going to read them all! I will rate this book full, as James Dashner has added many efforts in making this wonderful fiction.

The Client by John Grisham

THE CLIENT
I can safely say John Grisham delivered a good punch to my jaw with his extraordinarily good book ‘The Client’, leaving my jaw hanging the entire time. Filled with realistic horrors and suspense this book left me filled with fright and yet with a hunger for more. I can say this book is gripping enough to be the best read in daylight.
‘The Client’ follows an eleven-year-old boy Mark whose life takes a turn for the worst. One fateful day with his brother and one decision to save a mob lawyer from committing suicide left him with a deadly secret that could either ruin his life or worse end it. The secret is that he is one of the two people in the United States who knows where the body of the first US senator to be murdered in the office lies.
Mark then gets involved in the US senator’s murder trial. The FBI and prosecution team of the general attorney of Memphis desperately want him to tell the position of the body while the Mob want him to stay silenced. The Mob is willing to go to any extent to silence Mark and make sure the position of the body does not get out in the public, they are willing to go as far as killing him. The mob sends professional assassins to make sure he stays quiet, while the FBI even cross the law in attempt to gain access to the body. With this Mark is caught in a position where his morals get questioned every day. He can either tell where the body lies and live a life full of fear or he can stay quiet and keep himself and his family safe.
In the entire mess, the only person mark can truly trust is his lawyer, Reggie Love who he seeks to close the whereabouts of the body which lie in the garage of the deceased lawyer’s house. Mark is thrown into the world of courtrooms with only Reggie to defend him against the harsh allegations of the prosecuting team. Detention centres, jail threats, trials, near-death experiences by professional killers, Mark has experienced it all and in one final desperate attempt to save himself and his family he takes a life-threatening decision with Reggie. The decision could either be his salvation or his end his life
Mark’s character struck me deep in the heart, his cleverness, maturity, and intelligence which can be paralleled with an adult makes him a unique character. His love for movies and some of his childish outlooks on the world makes him perfect for the stereotype of ‘forced to grow up too fast’. Mark with his childish will to look cool followed his mother into smoking at the very age of nine which is completely outrageous and wrong on many levels and is one of his many flaws. Despite his flaws, Mark is a very brave and good person at heart. His decision to risk his life to save a stranger, him defending his mother and being the caregiver of his family, his decision to stand up to his abusive father says a lot about him and about the type of person he is.
The Client can have little mature themes in it that are not meant for people under 7th grade and can be a bit slow-paced in between. But it is a fantastic book that gave me a small idea of law and an insight into the life of lawyers, one of the many reasons I like this book. John Grisham is an actual lawyer by graduation which makes almost all the facts and proceedings as true as they can get in the United States of America.
The way John Grisham described the characters and their flaws made them even more realistic and lovable, unlike the perfect characters who somehow know exactly what to do, his characters have a very real-life tendency to be confused making them even more memorable. He created all his Gray characters with perfection. The unlikely relationship between Mark and his lawyer Reggie is filled with love, adding a touch of humanity and love in this book filled with corrupted and questionable characters, one of the many things I love.
At the end of the day, ‘The Client’ with its suspense, confusion, curiosity, wit, and chills is a great read for people who love thriller books and have a knack

Greg Hefley talks about how his mother does not like technology and smartphones, and is starting a petition to prevent the town from using electronic devices for a weekend. As his school year starts, Greg wants to try something different, so he signs up for the Homework Buddies program. At home, Greg's grandfather moves in with them after the rent is raised at his retirement home and his girlfriend breaks up with him. After Greg forgets to screw the toothpaste cap back on, his father Frank lectures him about how small things can lead to big consequences.
Greg hears about a school trip to an old-fashioned farm, which he decides not to attend. His mother gets enough signatures for her petition, so the next day, Greg attends a park clean-up. He gets tired and runs away, then meets up with his Homework Buddy. A teenager doing community service follows them as well, and when they are soon located by the adults, Greg pins the blame on him.
Back at home, while his parents are away, Greg tries to put the toothpaste cap back on after brushing his teeth, but it falls down the drain. He loosens a pipe to get it, but forgets to turn off the water valve first, causing a puddle of water to leak downstairs. His grandfather tells him that they can buy paint and cover up the stain, but while on the road, he drives the wrong direction and the car runs out of gas. Greg accidentally moves the car, which falls into a ditch, and his parents arrive. He decides to go on the trip to get out of town and avoid facing punishment from Frank.
After arriving at the farm, Greg hears rumours about a deranged farmer named Silas Scratch who still wanders around the area. The kids struggle to adapt to their uncomfortable cabins, with one eating part of his deodorant stick to become sick as an excuse to leave, causing the chaperones to confiscate all their deodorant so they do not try to eat it. Greg and his cabinmates raid other cabins for deodorant.
They steal one of the teachers' bags, and after they are caught, Frank is called as an emergency chaperone. While gathering firewood for the final night of camp, which is spent outside, Greg comes across an old shack that he thinks Silas Scratch lives in. It turns out to be a clean maintenance shed. Greg encounters his dad, who explains that he invented the rumour about Silas Scratch to prevent people from coming in the shack, which he had used as shelter himself. Frank sneaks everybody into the cabin to sleep. Greg figures that he might be stuck chaperoning at the farm when he is older, and he will want to use the shack as well, so he continues to spread rumours about Silas Scratch as he leaves.
